vi auguriamo uno splendido 2026 di nuovo con una copertina del New Yorker. Questa è uscita sul primo numero del 2024 della rivista ed è stata disegnata da Bianca Bagnarelli, illustratrice e fumettista italiana.

Faccio a tutti coloro che mi seguono carissimi auguri di Buon Natale con questa divertente copertina del New Yorker, uscita il 17 dicembre (il giorno del mio compleanno, tra l'altro) 1988, firmata da R.O. Blechman, allora nostro ospite a Milano.

 

What does it mean to edit a cover?

A questa domanda risponde l'art editor del New Yorker, Françoise Mouly, disegnatrice francese che ora vive a York (tra l'altro è la moglie di Art Spiegelman e tra l'altro è stata l'ideatrice della copertina tutta nera dopo l'11 settembre 2001).

Even in the visual field, there are not many editors. There are art directors, but that’s slightly different. Art directors often illustrate a topic that’s given to them—the editor decides whom or what to put on the cover, and then it’s a matter of illustrating that concept or taking a photo of a politician or celebrity. With New Yorker covers, we aren’t usually illustrating a story. Our cover is a work in and of itself.

 

My job is twofold: to generate and collect ideas, and then to work with the artists to make the ideas as clear and effective as possible. Each December, I send out a calendar for the coming year with the hallmark dates: holidays, news events, the Oscars. (Everyone always wants to do the Halloween cover.) The calendar starts a dialogue with dozens of artists ...

The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets è il titolo di un libro di Simon Singh (Bloomsbury), un fisico laureato a Cambridge che ora si occupa di divulgazione scientifica. Qui sostiene che i Simpson siano pieni di allusioni matematiche. "But "the truth", according to Singh, "is that many of the writers of The Simpsons are deeply in love with numbers, and their ultimate desire is to drip-feed morsels of mathematics into the subconscious minds of viewers". "Ultimate desire" may be pushing it, but as Singh demonstrates in his lively book, there's no shortage of mathematical jokes and references scattered through the show. Whether or not the writers of The Simpsons are covertly using a cartoon to foist mathematical concepts on the unwary, Singh without question is". guardian.

Maira Kalman

Di Maira Kalman, illustratrice per bambini e adulti, parla con entusiasmo Cathleen Schine, recensendo una mostra in corso al Jewish Museum di New York a lei dedicata, Maira Kalman: Various Illuminations (of a Crazy World). Oltre alla mostra, Schine parla di un libro di Kalman, uscito lo scorso autunno presso Penguin Press, e che raccoglie una serie di blog pubblicati dall'artista sul New York Times. Sia il libro che i blog si chiamano And the Pursue of Happiness. Andate a vederli, cliccando qui, sono meravigliosi.
