PAROLE
Inappropriate and unacceptable began their modern careers in the 1980s as part of the jargon of political correctness. E' in uscita presso Bloomsbury la ristampa di un delizioso libretto, The Recently Deflowered Girl: The Right Thing to Say on Every Dubious Occasion, scritto da Hyacinthe Phypps, alias Mel Juffe e illustrato da Edward Gorey.

A tribe. A group of people living together who, though all individuals, share a common set of values and principles. It boils down to this golden rule: 'We do things a certain way, and everyone else is an asshole.'”

In the folds of its hills on the Virginia shore of the Potomac, where its vast array of white tombstones evokes the mesmerizing image of an assembled army in its last resting place, Arlington National Cemetery splendidly honors the generations of self-sacrifice embodied in the nation's military dead. Sono disegni molto belli, come nota Paul Goldberger nell'introduzione, personali e rivelatori.

"There is a strange affiliation between literature and jealousy. Jealousy is wordy; it gorges on language. It is hyperbolic, growing fatter on every expression of itself. This is delicious for any writer who is not an understater of emotion. I love the dark, interior stickiness of the subject, where torment knows it should not be left to itself, but wants it no other way, and the victim forever haunts the border between the thing he fears and the thing he longs for." C'è anche qualcuno poco convinto dagli ultimi romanzi di Philip Roth (come me): "Axler’s artistic humbling may not reflect Roth’s experience. But whatever power and interest The Humbling possesses comes from the reader’s sense that it does reflect Roth’s apprehensions. After all, Roth is too unsparing a writer not to realize that The Humbling, like its predecessors, represents a dramatic shrinking of his fiction’s power and scope. The book is very short—a novella at most—and thinly imagined, with few surprises in plot or language. Roth’s characteristic rant—the vengeful, self-justifying, exhilarating speeches in which his characters define their anger and appetite—has shrunken, here, to Axler’s repetitive querulousness."
